Alaska Steelhead Fishing

We often get asked if there is steelhead fishing available on the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska steelhead fishing has long been a staple of the Alaska outdoorsmen but in recent years the numbers have greatly diminished as enchainment programs were stopped back in the the early 1990's. Since that point, fishing for steelhead on the Kenai Peninsula has been mostly a catch and release fishery.

But when most people think of steelhead fishing in Alaska, rivers like the Ninilchik and Kasilof just to the south can provide some good action. While the Kenai Peninsula may not be well known for its steelhead fishing, there actually are some opportunities available to wet a line in both South central and Southeast areas.

A very limited number of steelhead do enter the Kenai River each fall but catches are relatively rare and no direct targeting of these fish is available on a guided trip. All catches are incidental and no steelhead can be removed from the water by law in order to protect the remaining runs.

With stocking programs coming to an end the popularity of steelhead fishing dropped drastically and this limited pressure seems to be helping the natural production of a stable return of steelhead to the Kasilof, Anchor and Ninilchik rivers and a few are caught in Deep Creek too.

Steelhead fishing on the Kenai Peninsula is best in late fall; late October into mid-November is best. At this time the steelhead are entering the streams in preparation for spawning which occurs in the spring.

Although a few of our guests will venture down to try some fall steelhead fishing on the lower Kenai Peninsula streams, those that do often find lightning striking fast and often. We do offer limited guiding for steelhead but only on a request basis at this time.
